Welcome back to the Summer Term. Hopefully everyone has had a good Easter break and is returning to school full of energy and enthusiasm.

The Curriculum: Our main focus this term will be “The Romans” finding out how the Romans changed Britain. Our big question is ‘How did the Roman Culture help shape Britain? The hook at the start of the term will introduce the children to one of the many significant inventions the Roman’s brought to Britain (aqueducts).

During the Summer term we will spend a large proportion of the term investigating and interpreting the past. We will be looking at how our lives have changed because of the Romans and how they influenced a large portion of the world and we will use the topic to build an overview of world history and understand chronology of events.

In English we will look closely at Portal tales and Non- Chronological reports and use these to inspire our own writing. There will be a strong focus on improving accuracy of spelling, grammar and punctuation and the quality of handwriting. Reading and understanding the complexities of the different texts will also have a high priority throughout all our English lessons. Our class text will be ‘The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S Lewis.

In Maths Year 3 and 4 will be looking at money and time, having the ability to understand pounds and pence, be able to convert money and find change. The children will be looking at both digital and analogue clocks, being able to tell the time to minutes, hours, weeks, days, months and years. The children will also do some work on their Roman numerals. Year 3 will continue to develop their knowledge of fractions, whilst Year 4 continue to work on decimals. Year 4 will complete regular times-table sessions to in order to prepare for the screening test in June.

In Science we are looking at understanding light and sight, with the children having the ability to recognise they need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light. The children will take part in lots of investigation and practical sessions during this unit.

In Computing the children will participate in a variety of IT skill-based lessons, using the laptops and school technology whilst focusing heavily on internet safety.

In DT the children will be looking at STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics), explaining how key events and individuals have helped shape the work. The children to have a go at using circuits with the end project to make a battery- operated light.

In History and Geography, the children we be learning about The Romans. The children will be looking at questions like;

How did the Roman Empire grow?

When did the Romans invade Britain?

Who resisted Roman rule in Britain?

What did the Roman’s bring to Britain?

Where was the Roman town of Corinium?

In PSHE the children will be learning about growing up and relationships education. For year 3 this will involve the types of love, personal hygiene and a standalone lesson regarded the main organs of the body. Including the scientific name for reproductive organs. Year 4 will be following a similar curriculum to do with growing up and relationships; covering the human life cycle, changes in responsibilities as we grow older, personal hygiene and antibiotics, and stereotypes. The Year 4 girls will be having a talk about understanding menstruation and the menstruation cycle. More information about the standalone lessons will come out nearer to the time, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact your class teacher.

Summer term sees us in summer uniform, which should comprise of a school blue polo-t-shirt, grey shorts, trousers, summer dresses in blue check; black/dark coloured school shoes.

As usual in the second half of the summer term, we start to think about moving on to our new classes and we will be doing lots of activities to prepare us for this.

This term the Year 4’s will have their residential, participating in a range of challenging outdoor activities. In their PE sessions the children will be learning and completing athletics, rounders and tennis. As well as weekly Forest school sessions.

HOME LEARNING: It is our aim to support the children in becoming self-motivated and organised with their home learning:

Spelling: sheets have been sent home which are for referral only and do not need to be practiced for a test.  Children will complete a dictation as part of Jungle Club each Friday.  Practicing the words shared on the sheet at home each week will support the children with this.

There will continue to be the weekly timetables test. (Details of this were attached to the spelling sheets.)

The children are expected to read for at least half an hour each evening and make their own detailed entries in their reading journal. Also, they are to complete one of the reading activities found in the cover pages of the reading journals per week.

Performance: Our term will also culminate with the Y3&4 Easter Production.

CLASSROOM ORGANISATION:  Bags, lunch boxes and pencil cases. Cloakrooms and classroom space is limited and it is important that we minimise the amount of equipment brought in from home.  Our cloakroom area is shared and can become cluttered VERY quickly.  Please ensure that any bags/lunch boxes brought into school are of a reasonable size and that all personal property is clearly named.   We do provide frequent use stationary, however if children would like to bring in a pencil case it MUST fit in the drawer space provided.  The children are encouraged to be responsible for their own belongings however, it is still worth checking for letters, texts or emails at the end of the day.

Further detailed information regarding all trips, events and visits will be sent separately.  Make sure you check your email, text or the school website which will have more important school dates for your diary.

Additional Information

We are always able to access and drink water throughout the day, as such children should bring a named, and refillable water bottle each day.  Water bottles must be taken home and cleaned thoroughly each evening.

If your child has an inhaler, please could you make sure that it is clearly named and in date.  Their inhaler should be in school to be accessed at all times.  If your child requires any other medication please could you make us AND the office staff aware.

Formal parent evenings will be held in February to discuss your child’s progress.  However, if you would like to discuss any aspect of your child’s education or have any concerns at any time throughout the term, please do not hesitate to make an appointment.
